Can I charge a 8.4v battery with a 9.6v charger, or could this hurt the battery pack?
I have a 8.4v 1800mAh NiCD battery whose charger I have lost. I have a 9.6v NiCD charger and was wondering if it was possible and safe to charge the lower voltage battery with the higher-voltage charger.
NiCds are usually charged with 1/10 of capacity current, which in your
case is 180mA. Since 9.6V will cause overcurrent you have to limit it inserting serial resisotor of:
(9.6-8.4)/.18=6.66 ohm. You may find 6.8ohm as standard. You will need at least 1.5W power rating.
so 6.8ohm.1.5W reisitor in series and you are all set.
