Gen-Y Cops – Subtitle $7.99 Making its American debut as part of the cable TV anthology Jackie Chan Presents, Metal Mayhem was originally released theatrically in Asia and Europe as Tejing xinrenlei 2 — a title which roughly translates to Gen-X Cops II, proof enough that the film was intended as a sequel to the futuristic money-spinner Gen-X Cops. Paul Rudd is seen as “loose cannon” FBI agent Ian Curtis, one of several high-tech peacekeepers assigned to protect a group of American scientists at a Hong Kong-based international exposition. The fun begins when state of the art attack robot RS-1 (Skip Wilder) is unveiled at the exposition — only to be promptly stolen by disgruntled ex-designer, Kurt (Richard Sun). With the help of this new super-weapon and a virtual army of hypnotized Hong Kong cops, Kurt intends to either take over the world or destroy it in the attempt. Aiding and abetting Curtis in his efforts to retrieve the robot is his slinky girlfriend, Jane Quigley (Maggie Q). The Purple Heart - $12.99 The year is 1942: eight American airmen crash-land during the Doolittle bombing raid on Tokyo and are taken prisoner. Though slated for execution, the pilots are put through a “show trial” by the military, on a charge of committing war crimes. The Japanese judges promise to be merciful if only the Americans will reveal vital US military secrets. But captain Dana Andrews speaks for the rest of his melting-pot crew-some of whom have been subjected to the most horrific of tortures–when he chooses death before dishonor. In its own way, The Purple Heart is as racist a piece of propaganda as was ever produced by Hollywood. The Japanese are shown to be little more than sadistic beasts (at one point, the judges interrupt the trial by moronically shouting “Banzai” after receiving news of a military victory), while hissing, buck-toothed interrogator Richard Loo (“I attended your…Amelican universities”), unable to admit that he’s been wrong about Yankee resilience, commits hara-kiri. Remember, however, that The Purple Heart was made at a time when America was still at war with Japan, and political correctness was hardly a consideration. Miraculously, Padilla is eventually freed by his captors and returned to the United States, though the psychological scars he bears run deeper than any of his notable physical wounds. Upon his return home, Padilla is taken to a military hospital for psychiatric evaluation. When he escapes, the powers that be deem him an unacceptable risk due to the fact that the very existence of Epsilon Force goes in direct opposition to an Executive Order outlawing the assassination of foreign leaders. Shortly after the Dead made their move from acid tests to hoedowns, their pals Dave Torbert and John “Marmaduke” Dawson followed suit. Torbert and Dawson were the heart of New Riders of the Purple Sage, aided on their debut album by Dead buddies Jerry Garcia and Mickey Hart. There’s a still-slightly-stoned, morning-after feel here that works well with the New Riders’ low-key style. Their cowboy/hippie/outlaw ethic is espoused on the likes of “Last Lonely Eagle” and “Glendale Train” as horse trails meet Haight-Ashbury in an agreeably ramshackle manner. |

Canadian pilot Gregory Peck and two comrades-in-arms crash in the Burmese wilds. The three men are forced to hack and crawl their way to safety, surrounded on all sides by the Japanese. Peck’s subordinates don’t completely trust their leader, and not without reason: Peck’s nerves have been at the breaking point for months, and this experience may send him around the bend. But the ordeal strengthens Peck’s psyche. Her father, however, has arranged a marriage between Angela and the son of a business associate; Angela bitterly refuses to wed the young man, declaring she would prefer death to the false relationship. Her mother, Lucia (Giselda Volodi), arranges for a radical solution to this dilemma; using some privileged information as leverage, she persuades the village priest to declare that Angela is in fact Angelo and has been a male all along. This action prevents Angela from marrying the boy and allows her and Sara to be together, but now her father insists she take her place in a business she doesn’t care about, and the community isn’t sure how to react to the new “man” in the village.
