The Strange Case Of… [LP] [PA] $19.98 On the surface, a band blending driving hard rock with powerful ballads would seem like a fairly boilerplate proposition in a world already populated by Shinedown, Three Days Grace, and any number of other faceless post-grunge acts. Fortunately, Halestorm have their not-so-secret weapon, singer Lzzy Hale, whose powerful vocals easily set the band apart from its peers on its sophomore album, The Strange Case Of…. Delivering another versatile performance, Hale helps to give every song that special something, adding the right amount of snarl and grit to more aggressive songs like “Love Bites (So Do I),” while also bringing genuine passion to the more emotional “In Your Room.” Her ability to convey emotion without being dramatic is an asset that Halestorm take full advantage of, and to some extent, probably rely on. This isn’t to insinuate that the compositions backing up Hale are bad, but the music, while solidly written and cleanly executed, isn’t anything that fans of the genre haven’t already heard before. It’s a bit of a boon, then, that the strength that Halestorm play to is an exceptional one, and anyone that has grown tired of the current crop of meatheaded hard rock bands trying to seem sensitive would do well to give The Strange Case Of… a spin. ~ Gregory Heaney |

Basket Case – Special $8.99 The poor social skills of a young yokel turn out to have a horrifying explanation in this low-budget splatterfest, which marks the debut of Frankenhooker director Frank Henenlotter. The film begins with a bloody prologue and the arrival of young Duane Bradley (Kevin Van Hentenryck) at a broken-down New York hotel full of drunks, hookers, and assorted weirdos. An upstate native with few big-city survival skills, the earnest Duane seems slightly off. He flashes lots of bills at the hotel manager, carries a large wicker basket with him, and seems bewildered at the variety of characters on display. Once he’s alone, Duane’s own behavior becomes bewildering as he talks incessantly to some unseen presence and drops prodigious quantities of fast food into his basket. After Duane visits a surgeon’s office and the doctor gets rendered into a mangled corpse, all becomes clear; Duane is half of a pair of Siamese twins who were separated against their will in a brutal operation a decade earlier. Belial, his lumpen, beachball-sized brother, secretly survived the procedure and now wants to exact revenge on those who separated him from Duane. Things go according to plan except for one thing: Duane falls hard for coy, busty Sharon (Terri Susan Smith), the receptionist of one of the nefarious doctors. That doesn’t sit well with the malformed Belial, who’s as attracted to Sharon as he is jealous of Duane’s romance with her. Minor Case Of The Blues $14.99 Full performer name: Riverside City College Jazz Ensemble.Personnel: Andrew Cohen (piano); Jonathan Ares (drums); Francisco Michel (percussion).The Riverside City College Jazz Ensemble is one of a number of college jazz bands that have found an outlet to expose the strengths of their programs on the Sea Breeze Vista label. These recordings were made over a four-year period, showcasing a wide range of instrumentalists, all of whom face the challenge of making a name for themselves in the perpetually crowded jazz scene. But college bands have been evolving for years as music directors like Charlie Richard have greatly expanded the scope of music played by their bands, while the students consistently solo well and nail the demanding ensembles as well. Stanley Turrentine’s funky “Sugar” bustles with energy, with alto saxophonist Erik Rafnson and tenor saxophonist Adam Chavira shining in the spotlight. The late Michael Brecker’s “African Skies” packs a powerful punch, showcasing tenor saxophonist Bryan Parks and guitarist Sean Longstreet. The fusion piece “The Gathering Sky” is recast with violinist Isabella Reyes (replacing the synthesizer on the original recording) in a duet with guitarist Alicia Koch in an effective chart by Bob Curnow. Reyes is also featured in the pulsing contemporary setting of Gordon Goodwin’s “Game of Inches,” which proves infectious. Riverside City College’s jazz education program is clearly deserving of consideration by high-school jazz students seeking to further their education, from the evidence of this rewarding CD. ~ Ken Dryden |
