Use the microphone of Apple headphones with your computer?

I bought a 32GB iPod earlier this week and comes with some headphones Apple's very cool, and have a small volume control them, and also has a tiny microphone in it. I plugged my headphone section, but when I spoke it nothing happens. How I can use these headphones for music, and use my voice to talk on MSN?
