Red Weather [LP] $22.98 Red Weather was the first solo project from the lead guitarist of Blue Cheer. Originally released on the Phillips/Mercury label in 1969, the album immediately became a favorite on the underground music scene and established Stevens as a solo act. The music on Red Weather was dramatically different than that of Blue Cheer, with a well structured psychedelic sound like Quicksilver or the Grateful Dead rather than the sledgehammer hard rock sound of his former band. Recorded in England at the Trident Studios with the help of Nicky Hopkins on keyboards, drummer Mick Waller from the Jeff Beck Group, and Kevin Westlake from Blossom Toes, the album was hailed as a masterpiece by many British rock fans but was equally dismissed by Blue Cheer fans. The album contained eight songs that highlighted Stevens songwriting ability rather than his guitar prowess. After nearly 30 years the album was rereleased complete with the original psychedelic artwork cover. ~ Keith Pettipas |

I Cover the Waterfront – B&W $5.99 Max Miller’s best-seller forms the basis of this romantic melodrama about cynical, hard-drinking reporter Joe Miller (Ben Lyon), who exploits his romance with Julie Kirk (Claudette Colbert) to hand in a sensational story to his newspaper. Julie’s father Eli (Ernest Torrence) is a decrepit sea-captain who smuggles in illegal Chinese on the West Coast. For years, Joe has been promising his newspaper editor a major scoop on Chinese smuggling operations, and he finally delivers when Joe catches Eli red-handed. But his torrid affair with Julie confuses matters. Originally Joe’s plan was to get to Eli through Julie, but now he is in love with her, and he is not sure what to do. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi |

The Hunt for Red October – Widescreen Subtitle $9.99 The first of several films based on Tom Clancy’s “Jack Ryan” technothrillers, Hunt for Red October stars Alec Baldwin as eccentric CIA analyst Ryan and Sean Connery as Soviet submarine commander Marko Ramius. Ramius sets the plot in motion when he murders his political adviser, burns his orders, and steers his sub Red October towards American waters, hoping to defect. The CIA, aware that the Red October was about to embark on an evasive mission to demonstrate its ability to avoid detection and fire its nuclear missiles upon U.S. installations, believes that Ramius is insane, and that he plans to start World War III. To cover their own behinds, the Russians back up the CIA’s suspicion. Only Jack Ryan believes that Ramius’ mission is not as apocalyptic as it seems — and it is Ryan who is assigned to infiltrate the Red October to prove his theory. The sort of film that in an earlier era would have been called a “thinking man’s thriller,” The Hunt for Red October ushered in a new series of Hollywood-produced post-Cold War adventure films, including 1995′s Crimson Tide. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Red Horse [LP] $26.98 Full performer name: Eliza Gilkyson/Red Horse/John Gorka/Lucy Kaplansky.Red Horse is something of a folk supergroup, a trio containing the respected singer/songwriters John Gorka, Lucy Kaplansky, and Eliza Gilkyson. A dozen years earlier, Kaplansky had been part of a similarly styled trio called Cry Cry Cry, which featured Richard Shindell and Dar Williams. But unlike the latter group, whose lone album consisted mostly of cover tunes, Red Horse is focused on original material. Three-fourths of their self-titled debut album is self-penned, most of those songs being new versions of tracks originally heard on Gorka, Kaplansky, and Gilkyson’s respective solo albums. The mood throughout is cool and contemplative — most of the songs are adorned with sparse arrangements, allowing for a more intense focus on the vocals. Though there’s always a designated lead singer, there are plenty of warm, inviting harmonies on these tracks, and Gorka, Kaplansky, and Gilkyson all take admirable turns in front of the microphone. It’s in the songwriting department that things get a little unbalanced — while there are no clunkers here, Gorka is the most skilled songsmith of the three, and the album — which places his compositions at the end — winds up feeling heavily backloaded. Still, with all of the singers taking on each other’s tunes, Red Horse feels like a truly collective effort rather than just a glorified round-robin song swap. The covers that begin and end the album — Neil Young’s early tune “I Am a Child” and the traditional spiritual “Wayfaring Stranger” — are both high points, and the presence of a previously unreleased Gorka song, the winningly concise “If These Walls Could Talk,” should be a draw for devotees of the songwriter. ~ J. Allen |

Front Page/I Cover the Waterfront - $3.99 Includes:The Front Page (1931) I Cover the Waterfront (1933) The Front Page This first of four film versions of the Ben Hecht/Charlrd MacArthur Broadway hit stars Adolphe Menjou as explosive Chicago newspaper-editor Walter Burns and Pat O’Brien as his star reporter Hildy Johnson. Hildy is on the verge of getting married and retiring from Burns’ dirty little tabloid, but he agrees to cover one last story: the politically motivated execution of convicted cop killer Earl Williams (George E. Stone). Thanks to the stupidity of the police, Williams manages to escape, and Johnson hides the wounded fugitive in a rolltop desk in the prison pressroom. Burns enters the scene, senses a swell story (and also a means of keeping Johnson on his payroll), and conspires with Johnson to keep Williams out of sight until they can secure an exclusive interview. Burns will do anything to keep Johnson on the scene, including having the reporter’s future mother-in-law kidnapped. Complicating matters are Johnson’s fianc?e Peggy (Mary Brian), Williams’ girlfriend Molly Malloy (Mae Clarke), and the corrupt mayor (James Gordon) and sheriff (Clarence C. Wilson), who have railroaded Williams to the death house in order to win votes and are now trying to suppress the news that the governor has commuted Williams’ sentence. The Front Page was remade by Howard Hawks in 1939 as His Girl Friday, with the symbiotic relationship between Burns and Johnson changed to a sexual one by transforming Hildy Johnson into a woman (played by Rosalind Russell) with Cary Grant as her old flame Walter. It was again remade by Billy Wilder in 1974 with Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Carol Burnett, and a young Susan Sarandon. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi I Cover the Waterfront Max Miller’s best-seller forms the basis of this romantic melodrama about cynical, hard-drinking reporter Joe Miller (Ben Lyon), who exploits his romance with Julie Kirk (Claudette Colbert) to hand in a sensational story to his newspaper. Red Riding Trilogy [2 Discs] - $29.99 Includes:Red Riding: 1980 (2009) Red Riding: 1983 (2009) Red Riding: 1974 (2009) Red Riding: 1980 The Red Riding Trilogy continues in this sequel that picks up six years after the events of the first film. The Yorkshire Ripper is continuing to prey on the young women of a dead-end town, and the local police have proven completely ineffective in solving the crimes. When Manchester detective Peter Hunter (Paddy Considine) arrives in Yorkshire to investigate, he discovers a number of inconsistencies in the official report, and begins to suspect foul play. Unfortunately for both Detective Hunter and the growing list of victims, the local police seem unusually tight-lipped about the case. Perhaps their refusal to aid Detective Hunter in his investigation has something to do with his previous visit to Yorkshire in 1974, when he rubbed the local authorities the wrong way while investigating a shooting. As Detective Hunter delves deeper into the case, it becomes increasingly obvious that incompetence isn’t likely to blame for the lack of progress made by Yorkshire police. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi Red Riding: 1983 The Red Riding Trilogy draws to a close in this installment that finds Detective Chief Superintendent Maurice Jobson (David Morrissey) realizing that the Yorkshire Ripper may still be at large, despite the fact that someone has already been convicted of the heinous crimes. When a young girl is abducted in an incident that bears a chilling resemblance to the crimes of the Yorkshire Ripper, Chief Superintendent Jobson is forced to consider the possibility that he helped to put the wrong man behind bars. Meanwhile, local solicitor John Piggott (Mark Addy) stumbles onto evidence of a massive cover up, and wages a one-man mission to uncover the truth. Adapted from British author David Pease’s best-selling series of crime novels centering on the mystery of the Yorkshire Ripper. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi Red Riding: 1974 The first installment of the Red Riding Trilogy, 1974 follows rookie newspaper crime correspondent Eddie Dunford (Andrew Garfield) as he encounters police corruption while investigating a chilling series of child abductions in Yorkshire, England. Adapted from British author David Pease’s best-selling series of crime novels centering on the mystery of the Yorkshire Ripper, 1974 was quickly followed by 1980 (directed by James Marsh), and 1983 (directed by Anand Tucker). ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

Cover to Cover $14.99 When you hear that a member of Dream Theater has launched a side project, it’s understandable to assume that it’s going to be more of the heavy prog metal that they’ve become renowned for. But the 2006 release, Cover to Cover, is a true anomaly. Credited to ex-Spock’s Beard guitarist Neal Morse, Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, and bassist Randy George, the album features covers by the expected suspects (Cream’s “Badge” and the Who’s “I’m Free/Sparks”), as well as a few surprises (Joe Jackson’s “I’m the Man” and Chicago’s “Feelin’ Stronger Every Day”). And with covers of Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed” and George Harrison’s “What Is Life?” (as well as the aforementioned “Badge,” which was also penned by Harrison), the trio make no bones about being Beatles worshipers. Not exactly a very necessary release (you can probably stroll down to your neighborhood bar and hear a local band play these tunes), but Spock’s Beard and Dream Theater fans who need to own every recorded morsel should enjoy it. ~ Greg Prato |

Hunt for Red October/K-19: The Widowmaker [2 Discs] - $12.99 Includes:The Hunt for Red October (1990), MPAA Rating: PG K-19: The Widowmaker (2002), MPAA Rating: PG-13 The Hunt for Red October The first of several films based on Tom Clancy’s “Jack Ryan” technothrillers, Hunt for Red October stars Alec Baldwin as eccentric CIA analyst Ryan and Sean Connery as Soviet submarine commander Marko Ramius. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi K-19: The Widowmaker A real-life historical incident becomes the basis for this military thriller from director Kathryn Bigelow that’s reminiscent of such submarine dramas as Das Boot (1981), The Hunt for Red October (1990), Crimson Tide (1995), and U-571 (2000). Harrison Ford stars as Captain Alexi Vostrikov, a Russian naval officer who’s being given command of the Soviet Union’s first nuclear submarine, K-19, at the height of the Cold War in 1961. The vessel’s previous commander, Captain Mikhail Polenin (Liam Neeson) has been demoted to executive officer following a botched test and his outspoken assertions that the flagship is not yet ready for deployment, but he curbs his resentment and resolves to serve his new superior well. Polenin’s concerns are well founded: parts are not yet installed, equipment is missing, and the ship’s doctor is killed in an auto mishap. Political pressure forces Vostrikov to sail his crew into the North Atlantic anyway, for a missile fire test that serves as a warning to the U.S. that its enemy is now its technological equal. The test is a success, but a disastrous leak in the K-19′s reactor cooling system soon threatens to create enough heat to detonate the craft’s nuclear payload — which would certainly be mistaken for the first salvo in a worldwide atomic exchange and spark the beginning of World War III. With no other option, Vostrikov orders his men to repair the damage in ten-minute shifts, irradiating them hopelessly. The conflict between the seemingly bureaucratic Communist Vostrikov and the more humane Polenin escalates, until a surprising twist reveals where both officers’ loyalties truly lie. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi |

RED – Widescreen Subtitle AC3 Dolby $10.99 A group of former government assassins fights back against the CIA after they’re targeted for knowing too much in this adaptation of Warren Ellis’ acclaimed DC Comics graphic novels. Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) used to be a hired gun for the CIA. Along with Joe (Morgan Freeman), Marvin (John Malkovich), and Victoria (Helen Mirren), Frank’s specialty was carrying out contracts that the government didn’t want the public to know about. These days, Frank and his old gang are all retired, but the powers that be are still concerned that they know too much, and dispatch a team of top assassins to ensure their silence. Now, Frank and his former team members realize that their only hope for survival is to break into CIA headquarters and expose the truth. But once they’re in, the group uncovers evidence of a massive cover-up that promises to rock the very foundation of our government. Karl Urban, Brian Cox, Richard Dreyfuss, and Ernest Borgnine co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |
