Jazz aux Champs-Elysees $9.99 The very reasonable mid-line pricing of Universal Music’s Jazz in Paris series make it affordable to try out for jazz fans to explore the works of unfamiliar European artists. Pianist Jacques Di?val was well known for his French radio program Jazz aux Champs-Elys?es (which ran from 1954 to 1976, featuring performing guests such as a young Jean-Luc Ponty and the late Eric Dolphy), though he also recorded a good bit as a leader. The first of two studio sessions on this compilation finds Di?val leading a sextet of French all-stars, including tenor saxophonist Guy Lafitte, baritone saxophonist Michel de Villers, guitarist Sacha Distel, bassist Paul Rov?re, and drummer Christian Garros. Their program borrows heavily from the repertoire of American big bands, including “Jumpin’ with Symphony Sid” (used as a opening theme but listed oddly titled as “Indicatif”), a spirited “Jumpin’ at the Woodside,” a mellow “Solitude,” and a swinging treatment of “In a Mellow Tone.” The two saxophonists get the lion’s share of solo space, with Distel occasionally featured as well. The track steams right along, buoyed by Manu Lima’s synthetic wizardry, and was a huge hit in the Cape Verdean community. ?vora’s rendition of a Vinicius de Moraes and Antonio Carlos Jobim samba also swings and her voice soars from its guttural depths. As always, her mornas on this album are very soulful and strong. She has since made much finer albums and this should not be the starting point for the novice. However, the album does have some strong tracks and the musicians are the best in Cape Verdean music circles. For fans of the diva, the album is worth adding to their collection. It was her first. Aux Portes du Matin: Live at Instants Chavir?s $17.99 Full performer name: Christine Wodrascka/Ramon Lopez.Personnel: Christine Wodrascka (piano); Ramon Lopez.Seven months after the release of the conceptual album Songs of the Spanish Civil War, Ramon Lopez delivered a very different CD, Aux Portes du Matin (At Morning’s Door), his third release on Leo Records. Recorded live at Les Instants Chavir?s in Montreuil (France), it features the drummer engaged in free improvising with pianist Christine Wodrascka. This is a typical release for Leo: the musicians are barely known outside their home country, the instrumentation is anything but impressive, and yet the music surprises and charms. Lopez’ rock-meets-jazz-meets-improv vocabulary was not an obvious match for Wodrascka’s contemporary classical and power free flavors. Her hammering in “Fuis!” (“Flee!”) and “Il Sait Mal Ce Qu’est la Libert?” (“He Hardly Knows What Liberty Is”) sounds inspired by Cecil Taylor and mostly Fred Van Hove, with whom she has performed. Lopez’ playing is inventive and destabilizing, but the pianist steals the show, taking chances, confronting the drummer, cornering him at times. Her playing on the instrument’s strings in “L’Heure de la Dance” (“Dance Hour”) allows room only for light brush work, bringing the CD to a paradoxical finale, soft yet manic. Although Aux Portes du Matin is not “album of the year” material, it packs a highly enjoyable artistic surprise under inconspicuous clothes. ~ Fran?ois Couture |

La Dame aux Cam?lias (Paris National Opera Ballet) – Subtitle Dts $34.99 John Neumeier adapted his ballet La Dame aux cam?lias from novelist Alexandre Dumas’s roman of the same title (the same book that reportedly inspired Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata and Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film Moulin Rouge), making fervent use of the music of Frederic Chopin. The work tells of a couple who meet while attending a performance of Manon Lescaut and then enjoy a series of adventures together in and around Paris. The Paris Opera Ballet mounted this particular production in 2008; it stars Agn?s Letestu as Marguerite Gautier, Stephane Bullion as Armand Duval and Michael Denard as Monsieur Duval. Schumann Raconte Aux Enfants-Michel Bouquet-Le Pet $14.99 Personnel: Bobby Jaspar (flute); Michel Hausser (vibraphone); Kenny Clarke (drums).Belgian jazz artist Bobby Jaspar died far too young at age 37 in 1963, but fortunately made a handful of memorable dates as a leader. His last studio session under his name, previously reissued on Verve as Phenil Isopropil Amine, has been renamed Jeux de Quartes for its 2002 edition in the label’s Jazz in Paris series. Jaspar sticks exclusively to flute on these December 1958 studio recordings (his last as a leader, except for several live dates that have appeared on Fresh Sound and Mole Jazz). He’s joined by drummer Kenny Clarke, Sadi Lallemand or Michel Hausser (who also doubles on xylophone) on vibes, and either Paul Rovere or Jymie Merritt on bass, as well as percussionist Humberto Canto (on one of the two sessions). Jaspar’s soft arrangements prove very appealing for his originals, standards such as “Lullaby of the Leaves” and “There Will Never Be Another You,” and classic jazz tunes (an exotic “Misterioso” and a Latin-flavored “Chasin’ the Bird,” the latter featuring Hausser on xylophone). This 2002 reissue also corrects several of the misspellings of song titles and names present on the earlier CD. This is easily one of Jaspar’s finest recordings as a leader. ~ Ken Dryden |
